January is a good time to plant trees so come learn how to grow fruit trees in your home garden.  Tree talk includes peaches, plums, pears, figs and apples.  Blackberries & grapes will also be discussed.
This seminar will cover the basics including how to plant a tree and which fruit varieties excel in our area.   Master Gardener Joe Posern, fruit specialist, has been growing fruit in Austin since 2007 and will share his experience.

In partnership with the City of Austin-Office of Sustainability supporting a healthy and just local food system.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service-Travis Co will hold an Irrigation/Turf Maintenance Workshop on Oct 22, 2014. This conference is in response to our ongoing critical water issues. The general public can attend but the materials presented will be for turf and irrigation professionals such as those working with municipalities, including parks departments; golf courses; and large and commercial landscape maintenance firms as well as contractors; retail nurseries and other users of urban water resources.


The goal of the workshop is to share new technologies and best practices for water conservation and drought survival. Four Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) licensed irrigator credits are available to attendees.

Monte Nesbitt, AgriLife Extension state-wide fruit specialist, will be the presenter of this half-day workshop. The focus will be on fruits that can be successfully grown in Central Texas: stone fruits (peaches and plums), figs, pomegranates, and blackberries; but will also cover olives (a crop with quite a lot of interest from potential growers in the Hill Country at the moment) and citrus (with the current weather pattern of warmer winters in Central Texas, there are actually a few citrus crops that have real potential for Central Texas, if managed properly).

In addition to the wealth of knowledge that Mr. Nesbitt will share during his presentation, you’ll also have the unique opportunity to ask him questions particular to your own growing situation.

From site selection, soils, fertilization, and pruning to sustainable production practices and dealing with particular insects and diseases—we’ll cover the production basics, as well as unique specifics. This workshop is only offered semi-annually and is not to be missed!

This first course in our series on Backyard Basics will include a tour of the compost methods used on site at the AgriLife Demonstration Garden, weather permitting.

Backyard Basics: The Art of Self-Reliance

 

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Travis County will offer the Backyard Basics series where consumers, backyard gardeners, homemakers, and educators can learn about composting, vegetable gardening essentials, pest management and raising chickens for home egg production.

The monthly programs will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the AgriLife Extension office in southeast Austin, located at 1600-B Smith Road. Cost is $10 per course for early registration and $15 per course for late or on-site registration. A person may take as many of the different courses as desired.

8th Annual East Austin Garden Fair: A Passion for Plants

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Travis County Master Gardeners, and Austin Parks & Recreation are partnering to present the East Austin Garden Fair.

Free and open to the public, this fun, hands-on fair involves community members in creative, low-cost ways to grow vegetables, herbs and fruit to improve their family diet as well as information about Earth-Kind landscaping.  Get expert advice from Master Gardeners on all aspects of gardening and composting, as well as backyard chickens and beekeeping.  The fair will feature an assortment of DIY and demonstration activities, including garden planning, kids’ activities and container garden building.  FREE vegetable, herb and ornamental plants offered to participants while supplies last.

Author of several gardening books and founding editor and publisher of Homegrown: Good Sense Organic Gardening, Judy Barrett will discuss the merits of heirloom plants in the spring garden. Find out what makes a plant an heirloom, the pros and cons of using heirloom plants, and which of these plants do well here in central Texas.
